Places: Schenley Plaza a social success, but not so as park entrance
Post Gazette: "Monday a week ago was a beautiful fall day that felt more like summer. In Schenley Plaza, students stretched out on blankets, soaking up the sun; a father tossed a football with his children; mothers took their toddlers for rides on the PNC Carousel. Pitt students and teachers bought lunch at the food kiosks and ate it at movable tables and chairs. The big tent likewise was full of diners and readers and passers of time."

I agree that the new plaza may not be the most succsessful park entrance, but the plaza as a point of social gathering. Even if the plaza framed the entrance to the park more, there's still that pesky bridge and steam plant in the middle which is an odd segway.

I love it whhen people after the fact say, "Well, you would have been better off doing it this way." Because those people weren't there in the planning and budgeting process trying to make 35 different people happy. I agree that it is not a complete success, but how much can you complain about a project that turned a parking lot into a park? Seriously. Further, the park is taking positive steps to keep it friendly for everyone. It is a nice, relaxing place to go, and easy for students to get to. As for the cloud factory in the middle - well, heat has to come from somewhere, right? Plus, if you think of it as clouds, not steam, it is kind of cool.
I disagree entirely about this commentors thoughts on being a nice entrance to schenley. I think it leads my eye DIRECLTY in that path. The tent is sort of a nice, white place for my eyes to rest, and then it continues on in the adventure. If anything, I think the tent leads my eyes more towards the park than less. The line is a nice arch from the cement pathway to the road. Maybe it's just pleasing to my eye, but I don't think that the company was in the wrong for doing such a thing. Its just artsy.
