L.A. Feature Production Dips 5%

Backstage: "Although commercials rebounded slightly, feature film production in the Los Angeles region dropped 5% in the third quarter, compared with the same period in 2005, according to figures released by FilmL.A."

It is amazing how many productions are made in L.A. It is also interesting that the number of permitted days has declined so much since 1996. I think it is interesting to examine why this is happening. It is perhaps partially due to the fact that more films are being made outside Hollywood than previously. But it also may have something to do with the idea of putting more eggs into one basket. It is possible (and this is not based on statistical evidence, only speculation) that Hollywood is spending more on big budget films, which allows for fewer films to be made at any given time. Also the new idea of major studios having their own "independent arm" means that fewer true independents are making films. (On the other hand, are they getiing permits at all?)

Also, in response to Steve - New York gets filmed an awful lot, as does Chicago. One of the things that the article failed to mention was that most of the set work for Spider-Man 3 was actually filmed in New York at Steiner Studios. So many of the worlds created for the screen are filmed in other locales.
