Copyright protected physical space

Boing Boing: "One of the side-effects of the entertainment industry's war on copying is that it's created a kind of folk-mythology about copyright being a kind of magic word you can invoke to put a fence around anything that you want to police."

This post is entertaining.
At the rate we are going, in the future EVERYTHING will have a copyright.

I think this is pretty funny. Not just because the guy posted the sign, but also because I am sure that there are a ton of people who completely believe it, and that this blogger got so upset by it. I think that the main problem here is that people don't really understand copyright law. In class we discussed that you must pay royalties to even play a song in the lobby. Unfortunately, as is the nature of many laws, you must be a lawyer to fully understand all the implications of copyright law. In the 1950s, writers were told that in order to protect their copyright, they should mail a copy of their writing to themselves and NOT OPEN the envelope. That way when the question came up, they would have this solid proof. Today it is totally different.

But really, can you blame the guy for trying to protect his livelyhood? Escpecially with today's technology, it is more and more difficult to have an edge. Photographs can be taken anywhere, by anyone!

. . .and the never ending copyright battle rages on! While I admire the innovative attitude of this particualar entrepeneur, I can't help but laugh at the situation. To be honest, in our leagal-minded, sue-happy nation, it would not surprise me if you COULD copyright an area. I have always been, and will probably forever be confused by cpoyright laws. We as an industry seem to bend and break the rules so often, that I wonder if young professionals really have any grasp on the laws that exist (Because I know that I don't!). Is there a "copyright for dummies" book, because there should be!
