CBGB closing for good

Boing Boing: "Iconic punk institution CBGB in New York City is closing for good on Halloween. The Bowery club is shutting its doors after a lengthy rent dispute. Iggy Pop, Television, The Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, Patti Smith, and nearly every other first generation punk band graced the stage there at one time or another during its thirty-three years in existence."

Really sad to hear, especially since the club has been fighting its closure for so long. I remeber signing a petition to keep it open almost two years ago; I really thought it had a fighting chance.

Losing a punk rock institution like CGGBs is a huge bummer. I do feel that the legacy will live on with all the tee-shirts and trucker hats that they sold. (Hurry up and buy them on ebay before the price goes up) Moving the business to Las Vegas is a great plan, but a wee bit hypocritical for the punk crowd. I would see that as ‘selling out’ or ‘listening to the man’. But I do not know anything about punk… I listen to country.

you would think CBGB could of been turned into a historical landmark or something.
opening a new one doesn't seem like to good of an idea, things like that usually don't turn out to well when u try to recreate them the second time around, especially when the social atmosphere isnt anywhere close to being the same.

i think the owner should take all the stuff, find a place with cheep rent and make a museum.

or if they want to create another place like it, try and make it work more for todays culture, not try and copy the original exactly.

CBGB's is such a good time! Its quite sad to here its closing, although that is the way of New York, up the rent and kick out landmarks. I cant say that the one in Las Vegas will be any fun, but its nice to say that I was there when the real thing exsisted.

As Kim pointed out its the way of NY in terms of rent. Even though the owner is trying to keep everything as original as it can be, when they move the club to Vegas, I feel like its simply trying to recreate an era thats sadly passed. It's like the idea after Karina to move Mardi Gras somewhere else. It was a nice idea, but impossible to actually make work. The heart of CBGB is in New York, the club in Vegas will only be a tribute to what it once was.
