Athletic dancers defy their roots

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: "'Is Pilobolus like yoga?' the small girl seated behind me asked her mother during a performance by the dance company at the Chicago Theatre this weekend.
Observant kid. Although for a fuller description of the troupe she might have added that it's also like gymnastics, burlesque, modern dance and the human equivalent of Claymation."

Weird! I bet it is an enjoyable exploration for the dancers involved, but I must say that reading this review makes it seem like just a bunch of intwined bodies. Why would I pay to see that live? Expunging of sins? Doesn't sould like a very thought provoking dance movement. I could just go watch a pilates class (for nothiing!) rather than watch this on stage. A little too artsy fartsy for my taste.

I read an article on this dance group once and it looked amazing. It talked about the whole premise of their work and had photographs that illustrated some of their trademark moves and stances. It looked amazing to me, bodies intertwining and cooperating to become towering, balanced structures. It's unfortunate to hear that their recent work is not up to par with their past...

it's always discouraging to see that not everything is consistently strong, but in many ways a dance company has to take a step back to move forward.
hopefully they will be able to move forward and create even more interesting pieces of dance.
also, the unification of all of those different forms of movement sounds like the combination of martial arts and dance. It presents a new way of looking at movement.
