McCandless-born writer found herself through 'Orange'

TribLIVE: “Orange Is the New Black” changed McCandless-born writer Lauren Morelli's life on many levels.

The series, based on Piper Kerman's memoir “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison,” has been a smash hit both critically and commercially for the digital-streaming service Netflix. The premiere date for the third season is June 12.

“Orange Is the New Black” was Morelli's first writing job in television.

I have loved OITNB from the premiere of the show, and I can say that this article does great justice to the value of the show. The show represents something very important: a shift in consumer interest that has finally been payed attention to regardless of socio-political influence. Countless attempts have been made to have these kinds of complex relationships penetrate mainstream entertainment, however networks have always feared a loss of viewership because of their controversial nature. Netflix has really taken a step back and noticed the demand and importance for this kind of representation in the media, and it's exciting to see it paying off for them, just because it may influence other networks to follow suit and diversify their casts and plots. Were tired of seeing a whitewashed cast of cis-gendered, heterosexual relationships intertwined to create whatever sitcom/drama a network has cooked up. The world is too diverse for that, especially in an era of increased social awareness.
