Cool Tool: Compact Bolt Cutters with Folding Handles

toolguyd.com: I’ve owned ToughBuilt’s compact bolt cutters for quite a few years now (since 2011). They’re uniquely designed with handles that lock into place for use and fold out of the way for storage and transport.

With bolt cutters, longer handles mean greater leverage, but that also means greater bulkiness and size. These bolt cutters have collapsible handles, which make them far more portable than ordinary cutters.

I myself have never needed to lug around 18” or 24” bolt cutters, but seeing an average tool bag or case, I see how they can get cumbersome really quickly. Also, I feel like having the handles fold over the shears adds a safety feature to the tool that may or may not have been made in advance. For me, I feel much safer having the tip of the cutters in between the folding handles so you wouldn’t have to worry about it poking through the tool backpack or any other soft carrying case you may be using to transport your tools. It’s super swaggy that these bolt cutters come with a butterfly knife function that can make anyone look even more awesome and powerful while holding bolt cutters. It’s also great that the hinges are designed to not have a weaker structure than if the handles were straight like normal bolt cutters.

A friend of mine and I were talking about these kind of bolt cutters recently, and my immediate reaction was: “Huh, I didn’t know they would make a bolt cutter especially for bike thieves.” I cant think of a reason why a legitimate person would need bolt cutters that fit inside a backpack, maybe someone would need larger cutters to fit inside of a tool box, but is the quality and strength of a tool really something to sacrifice for being able to fit it into a bag. It seems to me that most people would be equally satisfied with a pair of fixed bolt cutters for what the guy in the article described using them for. For home and small work applications, I don’t think that I would buy these. However if I was putting together a small covert wire cutting team that needed mobility, sure, I might want a pair of these.
