Portland Opera makes dramatic move to summer seasons beginning in 2016: 'We want to avoid death by 1,000 paper cuts'

OregonLive.com: Portland Opera is planning to undergo the biggest change in its 50-year history. Beginning in 2016, the company will perform its entire season in a compressed, 12-week summer period.

The change, revealed as the curtain is about to rise on Portland Opera's 50th season, is an attempt to stabilize the company after years of fluctuating finances. And it will affect all aspects of the organization, from audience experience to casting, marketing, production and budgets.

Its hard for me to imagine Opera surviving for that much longer. I could be wrong but most people don't get old and then decide they like opera. I think the reason that Opera is struggling so much is because they are getting very few new members while their current audience dies out. So this shift, while necessary and definitely the right move, is a band aid. It seems the big advantage of this move is that they don't have to try to maintain year long interest. They can market all their shows for the same small time frame meaning once you have your audience, you can keep them for the summer. But that still requires an audience. In 50 years who will they be aiming their marketing towards?
