Historical Disney Princesses In Period Accurate Dresses

fashionablygeek.com: Here’s an interesting take on the Disney princesses that alters their existing gowns into period-accurate costumes. DeviantArtist Claire Hummel researched different periods and then made adjustments so the dresses would fit a specific time in history. She even explains how she altered each dress.

I have never realized before that Disney princesses are never actually given a set time period. It is so interesting that this woman has actually gone through the movies and extrapolated realistic time periods that they could be placed in and then adapted their clothing to fit the time. It is clear that the movie versions are much more sexualized and form fitting, but overall they actually do closely resemble clothing from time periods throughout history. It would be interesting to see what parts of the story would change when these realistic time periods are introduced into the stories - keeping the magic and everything else in the story - but I wonder if details would change - from the book that Belle reads to the construction of ship in The Little Mermaid.

I'm surprised how relatively accurate Disney was with their original costumes. Of course the were simplified greatly, but I think that was for the sake of their younger audience. Grand and elaborate costumes might distract or confuse smaller children because they'd be so concentrated on these new and strange costumes they've never seen before. They might even miss a major event in the story.
