Washington Post Theatre Critic Peter Marks Goes Private on Twitter After Conservative Criticism of Downstate Review

Playbill: Conservative political voices—including Texas Senator Ted Cruz—are turning a critical eye on Washington Post theatre critic Peter Marks following his positive review of Bruce Norris' Downstate, currently making an extended Off-Broadway premiere at Playwrights Horizons through December 22. Marks was forced to take his Twitter handle private after the brouhaha set his mentions ablaze.

This is not that surprising that people are jumping on this play without having seen it. Clyde’s - which was just this fall at City Theater had a character that has white power tattooed on his face and he’s a three dimensional character that you end up feeling for even though he obviously has a misguided world view and probably isn’t the smartest person for getting that inked on his face. Just because something like pedophilia - which is clearly wrong - is depicted, does not mean that it’s being condoned. Some of these hotheads have gone down this weird walk of grooming. I can’t stand that type of rhetoric especially when the catholic archdiocese of Baltimore has documented more than 600 people who were abused by members of the clergy over the last 80 years. This is only within the Baltimore area - and Ted Cruz is worried about a sex offender being depicted onstage which the catholic church has really had sex offenders onstage all over the country.
