Senate Passes LGBTQ+ Marriage Bill; How Does It Affect Queer Theatre Artists?

Playbill: The LGBTQ+ community saw a rare legislative win November 29, with a 61-36 bipartisan vote in the Senate on bill H.R. 8404. The legislation would ensconce federal recognition of gay marriages as the law of the land, following the Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling that established gay marriage as a Constitutional right.

I think this is momentous for the LGBTQ+ community. While there are still problems in how we will be treated in every state, it’s still better than what would happen if Obergefell v. Hodges were overturned without it. I do like that the article tries to talk about how this will affect the theatre community outside of NY and CA. Knowing that no matter what state I work in my marriage will have to be recognized by the state makes me feel somewhat better. This is especially important in regards to medical emergencies having my spouse make decisions about my care. Though as a queer theatre artist myself I would still question working with theatres in states that ban same-sex marriage. This will be especially important if Obergefell v. Hodges gets overturned. I do like that the article explains how H.R. 8404 will require states to recognize out-of-state marriages regardless of gender, race, or ethnicity of the spouses.
