I do not think I quite realized the extent to which the National Endowment for the Arts impacted my life until this summer. When I was young, my family did not have cable, so I grew up watching PBS. Every program was prefaced with "This program was made with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts... and Viewers Like You" and I heard that same line in the same tone so many times that I stopped hearing the words altogether. This summer, I had the opportunity to go to the Folk Life Festival on the National Mall. This year, the theme was Circus Arts, and so the Smithsonian had invited a bunch of circuses to come and perform in a big top tent they had set up on the lawn. I was watching one performance, when one aerialist was introduced as the first aerialist to receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Suddenly, I was hit by years of memories of sitting in front of the TV on a Saturday morning, watching Arthur and hearing that line. I am excited that the NEA continues to be an important part of life as I go further into this industry.
