I am glad to see an actual institution making steps towards fixing this wide spread problem that has recently come to national attention. I have been wondering what the best way to solve this problem is, because it seems to me that the individual does not quite have enough power to make much of a difference by themselves. It has to be a collection of people if we expect any real change to happen, and I am glad that SAG understands that and has begun to take steps to fix it. I do not think that they should stop here, in fact I think they should only get more aggressive in their attempt to alleviate this horrible reality that is permeating our industry. It would be great for more institutions to do the same: Equity, Paramount, Playbill. I do not really know, but I think everyone should make an attempt to work towards the solution here.
First I would like to say that this is about time something of this nature is set into an "official" statement or document. Saying that "We expect our members to live up to these standards, including in their dealings with other members and employees" is something that you don't think you would have to say. A lot of this whole issue feels like things that people shouldn't have to be told they cant do. These things should be common sense and be explicitly understood as how to appropriately act with other people. By them saying "This initiative gives members a clear understanding of their workplace rights and provides reliable guidance for members to navigate the unique environments of the entertainment, music and media industries" I hope it leads other groups and people to adopt this first step towards a safe environment once again.
