I was once told in middle school that a couple should never be playing romantic opposites because of the possibility of them possibly breaking up. Although I still remain firm to this belief, I find it really charming that have put in such a great amount of attention and care into creating an arc for their characters that goes beyond the text of the show. Nonetheless, I think this director is way to excited about a couple playing opposites in a show like Cabaret. I don't think a show about an exotic dancer and a random man from Pennsylvania who gets pregnant, has an abortion, separates at the end of the show, and is set in the backdrop of Nazi Germany is exactly a great form of couple bonding. I guess its great that they are so enthusiastic about starring together, but I am still very apprehensive that this relationship will be able to last because doing a show where you are faking emotions constantly every night can take a toll on a person and a toll on their ability to perform as the characters, which in turn, takes a toll on the show.

I think that the choice to get a real couple to play the two leads, with a heavily romantic plot, is a unique choice. Especially with the musical Cabaret the relationship between those two characters is stressed to a near breaking point for the entire show. I agree with what Shahzad said in his comment that couples should not be cast as romantic opposites because of how their interactions in real life could end up negatively affecting their performance, or even that the performance could end up negatively affecting their relationship. I’d be interested in talking to the actor and actress after the end of the run of the show to try and find out how the performance felt for them and if anything changed for them. If I were in their shoes I would not want to take the role. There’s too much that could go wrong in my opinion and I think that a romantic relationship shouldn’t put any weight on a professional one.

This article I had found very silly. There’s nothing new about two people who are married or dating playing opposite each other in a musical. Unless it’s a new show and both are creating new roles this is an old story told again and again about how much they love working together and how badly they wanted to do the show. I personally would not want to do a show with my Signiant other for many reasons. One major reason is that if we got into a fight it would be hard to leave it at the door or what if we break up. Another reason for me is that it would be so much time together and things would get boring. I however do think this couple seem to really want to be in the same show together which is very cute. Hopefully the show will be good and there will be no relationship problems between the two of them.
