I will agree that Taylor Swift does a better job than most artists in terms of artist- fan interaction, but I will also say that her (or probably more aptly, her team's) development of the Taylor Swift- based social networking app was a complete fail. None but the most dedicated fans would even consider committing fully to such an app. Pulling her social media presence from all other platforms only served to alienate the casual fans that make up most of her fan base. I have some strong feelings. I think what attracts fans most to artists they like is being able to identify with that artist. Taylor Swift struck a chord (literally) with young emotional girls everywhere when she released her first single. Hayley Kiyoko amassed a large cult following (in what seemed like) less than twenty four hours after she released her first EP. She was the "Lesbian Jesus" that young queer women could not find elsewhere in the music industry. The solution here (as I see it) is that the music industry needs to diversify if it wants to hit every demographic market in this country.
