NEXT Up: Kathryn Carr creates fantastical worlds with paper

www.nextpittsburgh.com: Pittsburgh-based artist, Kathryn Carr, who composes intricate compositions and illustrations by cutting paper with a precision knife blade. While living in Alaska in 2008, Kathryn started experimenting with paper cutting and became inspired by the German folk art form, scherenschnitte (shear-en-SNIT-tah), which depicts scenes from everyday life. Her work includes a line of greeting cards and children’s book illustrations, while her larger pieces — hand cut from sheets of Tyvek — are displayed in galleries, homes and corporate spaces.

It is really interesting to read the article as more of an interview transcript. Hearing about local Pittsburgh artists talk about their connection to the city, especially through their art, is a fascinating thing for me because it gives me more insight into a city that I am beginning to explore and adore. Her art form is gorgeous. I love the delicacy of the paper itself as it portrays the natural world. In the included photo of her piece “Two Bees in the Trees” you can see the beautiful similarity of the paper to the actual designs created by the leaves of the trees in the background.
