Live Nation CEO to Amazon: "Challenge Ticketmaster? Good Luck."

www.ticketnews.com: CEO Michael Rapino doesn’t seem troubled by news that e-commerce giant Amazon (NASDAQ – AMZN) is making inroads to the U.S. ticketing market. Rapino, whose company owns near-monopoly status on ticketing through subsidiary Ticketmaster, made it clear with remarks at a Goldman Sachs conference this week.

So, there’s clearly arguments to both sides of this issue. If Ticketmaster controls all the venues and tickets in the markets, they are able to spearhead technology to keep out scammers, keep up established relationships with vendors and venues, and consumers know where to go get their tickets. However, there are some positive possible outcomes with Amazon introducing themselves into the ticketing market. We could see streamlining in purchasing with Amazon’s platforms, introductions of new technologies and integrations, as well as the natural benefits of competition in any market. I’m not quite sure where I fall on this issue. I’ve personally been very pleased with Ticketmaster’s and Live Nation’s platforms and like how seamless they are. I know where to go for my tickets. That being said, my line of thinking immediately sends me to Ticketmaster for tickets, and I automatically assume I will be able to find them there for the best price. While not wrong, that may not be the healthiest habits of consumerism. It is interesting to read that the European market has been fairly open in terms of ticketing programs and that Amazon was able to insert itself there fairly well.
