Houston Theatres Survey the Damage

AMERICAN THEATRE: On Sunday Aug. 27, as Houston was being hammered by Tropical Storm Harvey, playwright Rajiv Joseph posted a video on Facebook of the Alley Theatre, where his newest play, Describe the Night, has been rehearsing. Brown flood water covered the theatre up to the front doors.

By Monday afternoon, the Alley’s managing director Dean Gladden posted a message on his personal Facebook page, reporting that the theatre’s second stage, the Neuhaus Theatre, was flooded, with “water almost as high as the ceiling” and “the basement level with Neuhaus dressing rooms is completely underwater.” Gladden predicted that the theatre would be closed until Wednesday at least.

I was looking back at old posts to comment on and I stumbled upon this one. Sad is an understatement in this situation. I know that I view this tragedy with a very biased and Houstonian heart, but it's still mind boggling to see the destruction of hurricane Harvey, especially the destruction that still exists now. The Alley Theatre was probably one of the worst affected by the storm. To add insult to injury, the theatre had just spent one year and millions of dollars on a new renovation of the theatre. Being one of the oldest, and most prestigious theatres in Houston, it was a loss that many theatre goers felt deeply and personally. Worse than the devastation of the theatre was the loss of employment for so many people in the theatre industry in Houston. I personally saw photos and facebook posts from my friends in Local 51 who all got together and helped people repair their homes. It was something that irreversibly binds a city together, but breaks your heart while doing so. For me personally, it was heart wrenching to have seen this devastation while being here in Pittsburgh through it all.
