alt-J Lighting Plots And Renderings For KOI Award-Nominated Design
www.livedesignonline.com: Jeremy Letcherman and Jackson Gallagher production design for alt-J's performance at The O2 Arena in London has been nominated for a 2017 Knight of Illumination (KOI) Award.
I’ve always been a big fan of Alt-J so when I heard that they were coming to Pittsburgh during our freshmen year, I immediately purchased tickets with a few of my friends. Little did I know at the time, there were two CMU alumni working on the tour, one with the projections and one with the lighting design. The performance was absolutely incredible and the production design was excellent. It’s interesting now to see how the design for the band has changed and grown over the past three years. This rig is much larger than that of the last tour, in particular the vertical space that the design encompasses. The band just released a new album so I would guess that Jackson will be a part of the creative team again for the next tour. As a freshman, seeing recent alumni working in an industry that I thought was out of reach before coming to CMU was amazing.
As said above, the rig really plays with vertical space. In a space like the O2, it's really easy to lose such a small group, but the design does a good job of pulling focus to the performers. Many of the more traditional touring theatrical productions put on at the O2 transfer well because of large ensembles/sets/choruses that fill the performance space. What's interesting about this lighting rig is that it sort of mimics the triptych-like shape of a gothic window. The beams both fill and frame the performance space and give the band a figurative pulpit from which to perform without literally building a huge set.
