‘Katdashians: Break the Musical’ Is Uncomfortably Spot On

Flavorwire: At around 2pm on a Thursday I remembered that I had tickets to my first musical in New York the same night. But I was already at work and dressed in a pair of Converse, jeans and a favorite t-shirt that reads “Pro-Black. Pro-Queer. Pro-Hoe.” [This is 100% true, and it’s an awesome shirt – Fashion Ed.] I was so horrified at my oversight that I considered braving the Forever 21 in Times Square for a quick change of clothes beforehand. But I immediately ‘nah’d the idea.

Katdashians sounds amazing, first of all. I love parodies and all things that make fun of entitled people, myself included. I enjoyed the way the author started this article by saying how under-dressed they were, and then finished by saying their under-dressed-ness was completely appropriate. The Kardashian/Jenner family fascinates me, and as someone who has an interest in psychology, I would love to interview them, but alas I will never be famous enough to get even close to poking the Kardashians. Instead, I spend my time reading articles by people who are famous enough to poke the Kardashians, or who feel the same way I do about them. Which is a mixture of awe and also kinda like “ewwwwwwww get away”. Their family is the ultimate group of problematic faves. If there is a culture that could be appropriated, the Kardashians will do so, and then commercialize it. On the other hand the fact that they broadcast basically the entirety of their lives to the world is really weird/interesting. I don’t think I could handle everyone, everywhere, knowing all about me and everything I do, but it makes them money.

This musical sounds like an incredible idea. I'm kind of surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. Putting a more theatrical performance to an already crazy and flamboyant family and series. The concept is absolutely perfect. The producers are making sure to make this a comedy, but their jokes are more than just witty puns. They have to do with the Kardashian/Jenner lifestyle and how they're appropriating culture. They are so idolized celebrities, so when they feel like appropriating, others follow and turns into an awful cycle. So, I'm glad that this musical is happening since we need to expose the problem with celebrities, their lifestyle, and appropriation.
