Elizabeth Bruce's Theatrical Journey, arts in the community
DC Theatre Scene: A phone rings. The voice on the other end reports that there’s an emergency: a teddy bear has broken its leg and needs to see a doctor right away. Thankfully, the phone was answered by teaching artist Elizabeth Bruce and her young students are now on the case.

I think it is great that something like this exists. Children learn best through interactive play, and it is especially important to be stimulating children’s minds during the summer. Teaching children problem solving skills at such a young age will only work to their benefit in the long run. This experience is teaching kids how to be resourceful and use what they can find, like Bruce speaks about using a salad bowl as a mountain. It is a “low-tech” environment. It is nice to hear that this program is encouraging children to be creative without the use of extensive technology. Another positive point of this program is the 30 minute sessions. Children do not have long attention spans, so limiting the experiences to a short amount of time is capitalizing on their unique minds. I am not sure if this counts as theater as much as it is structured play time. The children are living in alternate stories, but this does not seem to quite be theater.
