Could Immersive Fitness Be the Cure for Obesity?

Entertainment Designer: Just thinking about exercising in a gym is enough to send many Americans back to the couch. From a weird competitive culture that doesn’t fit a lot of people’s ideas of fun or getting healthy to the simple reality of sterile cardio machines, gyms simply don’t get people excited about getting fit. Think of spin classes, where you’re riding a bike as hard as you can pedal while staring at a blank wall or your own image in the mirror. Over the past 30 years, obesity in America has doubled in children and has increased by 400% in adolescents.

It’s no secret that going to a gym to exercise isn’t something that excites most people. IMAXshift is combating that by creating an immersive workout experience. The concept sounds like a fantastic idea, because of the immersive nature of the design. Giving people something to look at and think about while exercising makes it so much more bearable. This, combined with the model which allows for 50 people to be cycling side by side, will hopefully have a greater positive impact on the mood of the exercisers. Being in a group of committed people seems to be a great way to commit yourself as well. The IMAX design immerses the exercisers, taking them out of their heads and into a new space. It engages the senses- something that we try to achieve with theater too. Good theater is supposed to allow audience members to forget where they are in reality, and take them into the world of the show. The goals of IMAXshift and theater are very similar, and something I think both should keep in mind.
