‘Homeland’s’ Lesli Linka Glatter on TV Diversity: Nothing’s Changed

Variety: One thing I heard from a woman of color director who has directed an indie feature — she can’t get representation, she can’t get her first TV directing job. I talked to a few who said similar things — that it’s hard to see someone who hasn’t done a feature or who has done less than them getting opportunities to direct.

The fact that we still have to talk about the lack of female directors in 2015 is really disappointing to me. I think that Glatter is right in the sense that in order to get more directing jobs for women we need to increase the number of women working in other parts of the entertainment industry. However, I think one important thing to note about this article is that she is an executive producer for the TV show Homeland. This show has been repeatedly called out for its misrepresentation of Muslim culture, which has even been called racist at times. In fact, the show hired a group of artists to create Arabic graffiti as set dressing and instead they painted the words "Homeland is racist". No even one of the producers cared enough to check what they wrote and the episode premiered. Talking about gender diversity in TV is something that's really important, but it's important to remember that racial stereotyping is also still a huge issue.
