One of these days I’m going to get around to see Pittsburgh with all of its holiday lights up. Maybe do a little bit of ice skating while I’m at it. Although unfortunately, as cool as it would be to go downtown during the event, it might not happen due to school and scheduling conflicts. Everything outside of school during the year is trumped by what happens within the school. All of the events which would have been great to go to, are passed up so that we are able to pursue our degree. That’s what our time is for once we are done with school; to work hard and enjoy life. That’s exactly what a few people did in Pittsburgh last week as they went to Light Up Night. Reminds me of San Antonio a bit, excluding the fireworks of course, but we do have the Riverwalk it has a little change of scenery compared to the north.

Such a great tradition. As a member of student senate we were hoping to provide a shuttle service to make it easier for kids to get downtown. I was unable to go due to other commitments at that time, but after talking to Pitt natives they say that it's one of the best events of the year and it's not to miss!
Exploring the downtown area is such fun and an opportunity that CMU students should really take up more often, to really integrate themselves in the surrounding city and providing themselves with a relaxing study break at the same time! Back in Wisconsin we don't have any "holiday traditions" so to speak so this really interested me. I definitely plan on being there next year!

This seems lovely! The area I lived in back in Michigan had a similar tradition of "lighting up the night" with Christmas lights. The main shopping street would cover the exterior of every building in colored lights and it was beautiful. I hope to go downtown and see this tradition (maybe I'll try out the student senate'a shuttle, who knows?). Unfortunately, I probably won't have time until after next week.

On a less cheerful note, using this much electricity is not necessarily a good thing. I appreciate a preety light, but do people not realist that light pollution is a thing? You can hardly see the stars in this city as it is, I can't imagine how much worse it will be when you add in these decorations. The Hunt Library is the same. It is beautiful and a wonderful addition to campus, but at night/early morning, when no one else it awake, it is a beam (no kidding, a visible beam) of light into the sky. I'm not asking for Pittsburg to stop doing these decorations, just turn the lights off once in a while. The astronomy club goes out every week with high hopes of looking at the stars and they end up not being able to see any so they just spy on the cathedral of learning. This is a beautiful tradition, but I just want to see the stars again.
