Chiwetel Ejiofor on Hollywood diversity

Business Insider: British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, 38, had been a steadily working character actor for most of his career until he scored the lead in 2013’s “12 Years a Slave,” and shifted higher up the Hollywood food chain as his powerful performance led to a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

Since then, he's had a major role in the fall hit “The Martian,” and he co-stars opposite Julia Roberts in the upcoming thriller “Secret in Their Eyes” (in theaters November 20). He’s also currently shooting the upcoming Marvel adaptation “Doctor Strange,” in which he plays the evil Baron Mordo.

This is another example of large masses of people listening to actors for their opinions on an issue or piece or art. Most people don’t even bother to ask someone who is directly fighting the issue, or the person who actually created the piece of art. It would make so much more sense for this article to be talking about a racial activist, maybe one who is talking about representation in film. It would also make more sense for this article to talk to the writer of the film (or book in this case) or the director of the film. I think it would be really interesting to hear from the casting director of this project, why did they make those decisions to ignore race in some cases, and proudly explore different races in other cases? This film has received so much criticism for its casting choices, and yet I have not seen anything about the director or casting director speaking up and explaining their ideas.
