California’s Fair Pay Act: Will it Make the Difference for Women?

Variety: California Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed one of the country’s strongest equal pay laws — a measure that gained momentum after Patricia Arquette talked about gender pay disparity in her Oscar speech.

But there are doubts as to how the law will apply to the entertainment industry, particularly compensation for top-tier stars. There is also a question of how studios and production companies will defend themselves if hit with litigation.

I am really looking forward to news of actor negotiations after this law has been past. California is of course, as everyone knows the home of A LOT of very high prices salary negotiations. There was an article a while back about the salaries of the main cast of The Big Bang Theory. I believe what came out of that one was that the female lead in the show was paid as much as the supporting characters, possibly because of her gender. With this new law that has passed I look forward to hearing about the next round of negotiations. At the same time I hope this law ends up really helping the real people of the California work force to the point where the entire country will need to make sure to pass much legislature. I cannot even believe this is still a problem, how is a woman’s work inferior to that of a man’s? Well, it’s not, so the pay shouldn’t be either.
