The professionals recognized on the 4th of October at London's Troxy theater represent the best of the best, the masters of the West End and beyond. With award recipients ranging from the lighting designer for the official broadcast of Wales' 2015 election to Lady Gaga's touring lighting designer, to more traditional lighting design in places like London's Royal Opera House, awards recipients showed diversity in scope, range and ability.
However, not everything is coming up roses in the lighting world. Even in Europe, long hailed a the progressive older brother to America, gender parity is lacking. Of the 16 awards handed out on the 4th, only three went to women, who could only be found in the Theater (2) and Concert Touring and Events categories, leaving the television category noticeably masculine.
I know for a fact that the reason I'm noticing this disparity is because of the plethora of gender and racial inequality data I've consumed on this very blog in the past few weeks, but I'm glad for those articles, if not for the reality they inform about. The more education we have on this topic, the better.
