As someone who would be more than happy working in the themed entertainment world in the future this was a really cool article to read. I hope I can have similar opportunities and experiences as these people who are not that much older than me. TEA has given them a great opportunity and they are very luck to be where they are. Themed entertainment is different from most other forms of entertainment because it is fully immersive. There is no 30 foot rule, people go up to and touch everything. Everything must be perfect. Also, when you are designing something for someone to be looking at it from a seat it is very different then if you were to be designing it for people to walk through, you get a feeling when you are in an environment which is different then just looking at it. All in all themed entertainment is a really cool industry and I love that TEA is finding the new generation of practitioners for the field...I’m right here!
Since the SATE conference a few weeks ago, I have been thinking more and more about where I might fit into the themed entertainment industry. As it turns out, there are actually some really cool opportunities for managers in the industry! There are, of course, fewer than there are for designers, but it's something I am actively looking into. Being a special events manager in a theme park is probably one of the coolest things I've ever heard of and am really excited to explore. I know that TEA NextGen is an incredible resource for young designers (my friends are members), but I would love to find out what they might be able to provide me with as a manager. I've actually just been looking at their website and it seems like a good investment. Essentially the membership allows you to be associated with the TEA, which includes all the best people in the industry, and helps connect you to internships and other networks of helpful people. There is also, of course, the publications that include news about the industry to keep students up to date. All in all, it looks like a great way to get involved in a fairly closed industry. Here's hoping for some success in there!
For someone considering going into the themed entertainment world NextGen seems like an amazing resource. I have always loved the aspect about theater that it creating an experience. And coming from the fact that I have consistently gone to Universal Orlando theme park every year since I was 6, the idea of being a part of the creation team is something that defiantly excites me. By far I think augmented reality and the interactivity of using our smart phone devices is taking the immersive world building storytelling to a new level. This is because we as a society have been now conditioned to be so attached to our phones and rely on them for virtually everything the thought of breaking that standard and using them to help us to connect to the world around us helps to break the cycle without feeling the loss and pain. With augmented reality it allows for more visual world building to take place that doesn’t take the labor and man hours that would make it less effective to the designer’s concept of the experience if it was physical there. The possibilities to create a world for the audience to experience seems endless in the themed entertainment industry right now.
