sightlines.usitt.org: Recently, USITT began using a feature of our member management system that allows us to collect more demographic information about our members.
Individuals are asked to log in to our new website and fill out profile information such as where they went to school, when they graduated, and their primary area of interest. Organizational members are asked about their company size, products, or internship programs. So why are we asking?

I think it’s very interesting that USITT is choosing to care so much about their members. This is how to effectively run an organization. I know at their conventions USITT questions their members, but with these demographic surveys they can assist all members easily. That way even the broke high school kids can learn how to pursue and get engaged in the field from a reputable source. I remember specifically going to the SETC CONVENTION AND EVERYONE HAD SO MUCH conflicting information to offer about programs and class sizes and what works best, because it’s all essentially one big pitching session. If they can get this system up and keep it active it will be a huge resource for prospective theatrical participants. It is also cool that the institution isn’t sharing anyone’s data with anyone, so that more member will be inclined to participate, expanding on the data collected and making the information more relatable.
I think it's great that USITT is doing this. I think the conference could really be greatly improved by learning more about who is going to the conference every year, and it could also get more people involved if it knew what it was lacking based on who ISN'T there. I think USITT is a really great organization and I really love going, but the older I get, and the less I go to speak to grad school options and get jobs, the less there is for me each year. I love the workshops and I've always loved going to them, but I think there can be more outside of the workshops for currently working adults. I think the networking could be punched up more publicly and so on and so forth. Either way, I'm really glad this is being done for all of these reasons, as well as diversity purposes, although I think USITT has really be working at that already. We can always do more.
