Though no field of study truly guarantees any kind of job or future certainty, since transferring into an arts-based major, I have found it much easier to question my future in terms of "success". Successes like the kind achieved by this class of MacArthur Fellows have become much more weighty, and more poignant. These artists are being celebrated for producing work that is uniquely theirs, in both vision and process. Their success is truly of their own artistic merit, rather than being a product of a "successful" application of a pretested formula. Today, innumerable articles are published about shows, films, and other works that are "award contenders". Instead of nuancing a preexisting artistic structure, these MacArthur Fellows have produced and developed new, challenging works. The have created art for themselves that has happened to be successful, instead of modifying the art or developing a vision with an eye toward final "success".
