Parents in Performing Arts launches with calls for job shares and better rehearsal scheduling

News | The Stage: Theatre producers are being urged to allow actors and backstage staff to share roles, in a bid to reduce the pressure on parents working in the performing arts sector.

The proposal was one of many put forward at the launch of Parents in Performing Arts, a campaign body that is seeking to improve conditions for people with children in the sector.

I actually never see this issue being raised, so this article is pretty exciting. It's a on a British website, and I wonder if they are more aware of this there simply because there already are more systems in place for parents than there are in the US, for any industry or field. I like the idea of making it possible for people with families to continue their careers in the theater, and I think it also promotes a more healthy view of what it means to be a theater artist or worker. It's true that when you're trying to get established and start working, it's important to be ready and able to give a lot of your time, but it should be possible to ease off into a more realistic rhythm once it becomes a career. I don't want to have to choose between a successful career in the arts and having a family, and I hope that when the time comes, I will be able to do both. I have a lot of feelings about empowering parents in the workplace in general, and I hope to see progress in the arts industry specifically.
