Men Need to Help Create More Opportunities for Women in Television

Variety: Lifetime’s acclaimed summer drama “Unreal” opened with a memorable image: Shiri Appleby’s character, Rachel, the producer of a reality dating show, “Everlasting,” was sprawled on the floor of a limousine, surrounded by the show’s contestants and trying to avoid the cameras. Rachel’s face revealed her conflicting emotions as she listened to the contestants chatter, and her T-shirt bore the slogan, “This is what a feminist looks like.”

Equality is a big talk right now and on top of that feminism. What I liked about this article is that it shows that women writers are fighting for different stories, not the usual rape ones but something different. But I also liked the idea that in order to have change the men in the film industry need to change it. They hold the bigger hand right now and if we as humans want to be equal and make new and fresh work then men need to make a change to get more women involved and included. I never have really thought of how little women work as writers in the film industry because I don’t focus on that when I watch a show but I can see how different episodes can be written and viewed differently when women are in charge. There is a different energy and focus. I think it is needed in some areas but not everywhere. I want to see more of a balance of men and women having the creative control because sometimes it is nice to see the difference and each sex has its own strengths in stories.

It's sad to realize that this may be true. Men who are higher in power seem to care less about feminism and women in the work world than most men in our world. It seems people are starting to change their minds about what they think about the female population and what they are capable of. Men are finally understanding that woman can be successful and good leaders in our society. They don't have to be just stay at home wives or secretaries. Women have done so many cool things in this century. Directors, Designers, Doctors, Lawyers, etc. They really seem to stand out from the crowd. However, there still seems to be a problem with the CEOs and top dogs of companies. Men who fit these roles and don't wanna put anyone above them so they look past all the women who have the potentially to join them in these roles. I know that when I enter this world I will be able to communicate my way through the struggle that women go through. I know how to handle myself and i'm ready to fight back.
