Elon & Emmanuelle

Cultural Weekly: While it’s a bit sweeter than is my usual wont, this week’s selection for ScreenDance Diaries is a viable exploration of the intersections of dance, imagination, young love, and a brick wall. Elon & Emmanuelle depicts a young woman who stops to sit at a bench accompanied by a humungous white balloon, and begins to refresh herself with a drink while staring at the wall in front of her.

One of the best elements of this piece was its ties to artwork by Banksy, a kind of everyman artist. Popular interest in him and wide familiarity with his body of work helps the video access a broader audience. Though some might criticize the story - boy meets girl, they fall in love - as trite, I thought the simple, near-universal plot was an excellent vehicle through which to explore this kind of storytelling. There were several mediums very effectively used within this video, and media (for once) seemed truly intrinsic to the story, instead of serving in a "gilding the lily" capacity. The use of story within a story is often difficult to portray and pull off, and yet, even without words, these two actors clearly told a narrative story using the limited tools available to them. The precision of their minute facial movements was key, as were the consistent stylistic choices in their gestures.
