Cooper: It's Come To This, CSAS Beginning Campaign For New Auditorium Seats

Times Free Press: When a school district has a $200 million maintenance backlog, auditorium seats are not going to be at the front of the line.

With that in mind, Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences has had to begin its own campaign to replace the seating in the nearly 1,100-seat Creed Bates Memorial Auditorium.

I think this article points to an issue that is bigger than auditorium seats. We have a school district that is literally falling apart. Public schools are to give everyone a free education, however, what kind of education can you get from a school in shambles. I was fortunate enough to go to an expertly maintained school. We had carpeted halls and classrooms, well designed spaces and comfy, inviting furniture. The atmosphere where I learned allowed me to learn. I do not think I would have had the same experience if all my teachers and classmates were the same, but the building was a mess. There is something so important about your environment that adds to what you glean from what is going on in the environment. If you go see a show in a falling apart theater, you probably will not think too highly of the show, but again, if it was the exact same show in a beautiful Broadway house, the show would seem much better. I think those who make the decisions should really think about how maintenance repairs in the school could seriously enhance the system.
