Undervalued Assets: Staying Up To Speed On Mic Accessories & Cable

Pro Sound Web: Microphone stands, clips, and cables are some of the most underappreciated items we use at every gig. Yet without stands, clips and clamps to keep mics in place, they won’t be able to pick up the vocal or instrument.

And cables are a true lifeline of every system. It’s amazing how many times I’ve seen a fantastic mic connected to a great PA via a lousy cable that ruins the whole thing.

I don’t know if I can really take this seriously.

I haven’t been on many sound calls, but very rarely have I found the problem with the rig to be the microphone clip. I mean, typically I pull one out of a bin and screw it onto the stand.

I do like that this article points out that one can purchase the tap for “mic stand thread” and publishes a source. I know you can get the tap from McMaster, but it’s pretty expensive. It’s a neat little tool to be able to pull out when a thing won’t screw into another thing.

Cables are another matter. I remember reading an article in which an audiophile did a blind comparison of Monster Cables vs Stripped Wire Hanger. The wire hanger won.

I suppose what’s really important in a cable is the ability for it to coil and uncoil nicely and many times over again, and behaving predictably. I suppose a Monster Cable does that at least a tiny bit better than a wire hanger.
