Two Philadelphia Unions Using the Pope for Bargaining Power

TVSpy: According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, employees represented by IATSE Local 804 at CBS-owned KYW have not set a specific strike date, but those represented by IBEW Local 98 at NBC-owned WCAU have set a strike date of September 21. The Pope comes to Philadelphia next Saturday, September 26.

I've never really thought about how unions need bargaining power to strike outside of the standard, work will not progress if a strike occurs- except for the fact that, with modern labor laws, work continues albeit not as effectively. In a partial union shop in an economic strike, the workers could be replaced, and I do not believe that even an influential person coming into the theatre would change the outcome of the negotiations. In a fully union shop or theatre, I wonder if something as powerful as, “the work will not get done to its usual standard if at all” will be impactful if an important person is having an event at the venue. It seems to me like that is a much stronger bargaining chip than “the normal work we usually do will not get done”.

I do wonder why the pope coming into town is seen as the particular bargaining chip they need though. Is he speaking at a lot of venues that require union crews?
