Signature Theatre wants your new musical

The Washington Post: There’s another place for you in Arlington to hone your new musical.

Signature Theatre revealed details on Thursday of its new SigWorks: Musical Theater Lab, a project that begins next summer with workshop productions of two still-to-be-chosen original musicals.

I have always loved seeing shows at Signature Theatre. I have been going there for many years, and everything has been amazing. It’s great that they are opening up to producing new works. As said in the article, Signature Theatre has had a good track record with new plays and musicals. Just this past summer, I saw the new musical Dear Evan Hansen, which is now headed to off-broadway. I think that it is great how the play readings are free for everyone. That is a great way to allow the outside community to see professional theatre.I am excited to see what new and interesting productions Signature Theatre has to show to the theatre community.

I think this is really cool and very important to the world of theatre. In my opinion, there’s a ton of interesting things that are happening around us, and though older shows have themes that modern times can identify with, they can’t quite capture the dynamics surrounding our culture. I love the classics, but the incorporation of new works from new authors play an important role in the revitalization of the field. I often wonder how new works are ever supposed to get picked up, without just hoping that one day someone with money is in the audience of one of their shows.

Another thing I like about the program is the performances at different parts of the process. One week seems really early, but by giving performances during different stages of the work shop you can see how the actors, directors and writers alike all grow as artist, and begin to get an idea about what their potential is.
