Haunted houses make scary money

Marketplace.org: Americans plan to spend about $7 billion dollars on Halloween this fall. A good chunk of that change will be spent at spooky attractions.

The creep-out factor starts at the entrance to Dark Hour Haunted House’s Halloween Show in Plano, Texas, as a 9-foot-tall furry bat sneaks up on a woman buying tickets. In a dark corner, an animatronic witch tells a scary story and stirs a steaming cauldron.

It is scary to see how far haunted houses have come. They're still all about the fun of being scared, but the expectations are so much higher now. Haunted houses have gone from terrifying kids on Halloween to full-blown entertainment systems designed to make a profit. Halloween is selling out and people are buying.

It's not necessarily bad that Halloween is evolving (it's my favorite holiday and I like that the scares are beginning to grow with me), but there's the possibility of squashing originality in order to ensure a buck. The real fun is creating the scare, not churning out countless haunted houses that all produce the same material.

Haunted houses are starting to become the main holiday attraction for the season. It seems everybody want to get scared for Halloween. With all of the new innovated ways to perform and construct entertainment, haunted houses are taking the world by storm. From make-up, to lighting and to set pieces these houses take their audience from 1-100 in the scare factor. I remember watching documentaries of haunted houses and how the said it may take hours before the "victims" leave the house. Some haunted houses even incorporate a tractor ride and a corn maze to add effect to the environment. And people from all over the world want to experience that. There is no doubt that these houses are making large amounts of money and creating many jobs. It just screams entertainment.

There are a ton of factors working together to make haunted houses succeed the way they do. They're an incredibly unique experience, we don't visit themed mazes year round. I think thats something that makes people want to come to them. They're also a great way to get together with others that isn't just going out to see a movie or spending tons of money going out. Not to mention the fact that everyone seems to think they can put a great haunted house together. What they dont tell you is that the most successful haunted houses are spending a ton of money on these elaborate productions.

This article offers an alternate perspective on the idea of haunted houses. Unlike the previous article, where people talk about the ways to make a perfect haunted house. This article talks a bit about the money issue that comes up with the creation of these houses. Everyone now expects these super creative, meticulously planned and artfully executed works of art for their haunted houses, and some people dont have the size or budget for that.

This is pretty crazy. I would never have guessed that Haunted Houses made as much as they do before reading this article. In my childhood, I never really went to Haunted Houses because I was terrified of scary things. However, the few Haunted Houses that I have been to have been pretty lame and run down. As this article points out, it costs a ton of money to put up a Haunted House that will be profitable. This means that the amounts of people who are going to Haunted Houses must be huge. Even though I appreciate the spirit of Halloween, I just don't see how Haunted Houses are such a huge attraction. Regardless, the people that are investing lots of money into creating awesome Haunted Houses are pretty smart. I just would have never thought Haunted Houses would be so profitable before reading this article.

I would have never guessed before reading this article that one in five Americans plan on attending a haunted attraction each year. Halloween is one of the most unique holidays and continues to grab in the interest of millions. Halloween is a great time for people to really step away from their daily lives and have fun. The feeling of being scared is like nothing else and its not something we experience on a daily basis. I believe that this industry is only going to continue to grow as technology develops. The key is to maintain a level of fear strong enough to make people want to come back for more.

I completely disagree with Zoe Clayton in terms of halloween selling out. The haunted house craze has been around for a significant amount of time. in the last 10 years it does seem that the haunted house craze has turned into a far more profitable genre that is less dependant on the Halloween season. I find myself more worried with the bastardized industry of horror attractions. in the last 5 years there has been a growing trend in extreme terror attractions. what started with over night attractions with waivers and safe words to borderline volunteer torture attractions. These extreme attractions I think are crossing a line that should never have been touched in the first place. A haunted house is a themed environment that is created to take people out of their comfort zone. Queen Mary's Dark Harbour I feel is a fantastic representation of a great quality haunt that people have enjoyed for years and will continue to do so because it doesn't abuse the trust that comes with partaking in a haunted house.

Personally, I am not a fan of haunted houses but that is because I am a little baby when it comes to getting scared. I do know that so many people enjoy going to these events and will pay an arm and a leg for it. The holiday as a whole however is so expensive and makes a ton of money. If you go into any costume store each costume is a minimum of twenty dollars and just go hope from there. Halloween is an expensive holiday and people will do all they can to make money off of it. Haunted houses are an easy way to do this, I am not sure about here but back at home they pop up all over the place some for commercial purposes and others for charity. Either way I know people who will go to each and every one.

I think what makes haunted houses great is that they can scare so many people on so many levels much like beauty affects many people to feel many different emotions all at the same time. like an art form designers, artists, and actors can now strive to make any environment scary or surreal. to strike fear into the hearts of people around the world, all in very different ways. as time goes on and technology improves the fear and hysteria will be so surreal it will make people line at the door in order to live out their nightmares, again and again.
