8 Real-Life Robots That Inspired Big Hero 6

gizmodo.com: The star of the new Disney-Marvel movie Big Hero 6 is a poofy robot named Baymax who can assess your health with a laser-enabled two-second full-body scan. He also might soon be a reality. Baymax and other robots in the film were inspired by eight actual robots, some of which were designed and built in labs at MIT, Carnegie Mellon, and DARPA.

I think this article is really quite interesting. Technology portrayed in entertainment has always been a peculiar area because like the article says, even if a director tries to implement current technology into a movie, it can often be outdated by the release of the movie. For example, if a director had chosen to utilize the release of a new iPhone in a movie, there is a good chance that a new model had already been released by the opening. Also, it is awesome that the main robot was inspired by research here at CMU. Although it is not directly or purposefully a collaboration between arts and technology, it utilizes both and makes it seamless.

The Carnegie Mellon connection gets even more awesome, as a friend of mine worked on the robot arm in the Soft Machine Labs. I think that one of the best things about science fiction like this is that it gives us both a glimpse and an inspiration of what we could do. It is a way for us to think out what we might possibly do when we take current technology to the next level, and in a way science fiction allows us to think through some of the ethical ramifications of what could happen before we actually do the thing.
