Guthrie Offers First-Ever "Tweet Seats"

Guthrie Theater: The Guthrie Theater today announced that beginning December 27, the theater will offer its first-ever "Tweet Seats" during four consecutive Thursday performances of The Servant of Two Masters, allowing social media users an opportunity to interact during the show. A limited number of seats located in a balcony level of the McGuire Proscenium in a section that will not be disruptive to other patrons will be designated as Tweet Seats. Tweet Seat tickets are $15 and are available by calling the Guthrie Box Office at 612.377.2224, and mentioning "Tweet." Tickets are not available online, with other offers, or on previously purchased tickets. Handing fees may apply.

Well, I can't say I saw this coming. Using your phone at the theater, movies or any kind of performance event is so clearly frowned upon that this initiative comes as a surprise. I guess social media has grown to be a huge part of today's culture, and a major part of some peoples' lives; it was probably inevitable that its influence would spread to unexpected areas of our lives. Audience members already tweet, blog about and post pictures of the shows they go to, maybe it does make sense that they would extend this activity to the performance itself. The question I'm asking myself is, is this really useful or necessary at all? I'm guessing the popularity (or not) of these tweet seats will provide an answer. It will sure be interesting to see if this is a success, and if yes, will other theaters start doing it too? Could it be a way to make theater appeal to younger audiences for whom smartphones and social media is an inherent part of their culture?
