Midnight Radio returns with Secret Agents & Spies
Theater Reviews + Features | Pittsburgh City Paper: At first glance, watching a radio show doesn't sound like the most theatrical of events. But if you let that dissuade you, you'll never find out what a fun evening Bricolage's Midnight Radio series can be.
Each Midnight Radio installment — the series is now in its fourth year — takes us into a studio where a radio program is being broadcast live.

We talked about this in Sound mini. Apparently the foley artist does a great job, and it is awesome to watch live. I definitely plan on going to one of these sometime. It's a fascinating concept for entertainment, and a constant challenge to keep it fresh and engaging in this digital world of iPhones and endless internet access.
I must have been living under a rock these past few years, which is entirely possible on this campus, because I don't remember hearing about this show. But I can definitely see the allure. Radio shows back in the day, were popular for a reason. Now you might say that was because they had no other form of easy entertainment right in their living rooms. Which might be partly true. But I know that on iTunes they have old school podcasts of gum shoe radio, and they are actually really entertaining. So in person especially with musicians and all the actors making their own sound effects I think that it sounds like a really fun show.
I can’t help but think about the scene from ‘A Christmas Story’ and Ralphie decoding the secret message from Little Orphan Annie, so I can certainly see the nostalgic value in this series. It also reminds me of ‘Talk Radio’ by Eric Bogosian, the play more so than the movie, which would be sort of an 80’s or 90’s version of what ‘Secret Agents & Spies’ sounds like it could be. It especially brings a more “live” on the spot feeling than a more “standard” straight play might. I think it’s something I might have to try and check out.
