Highlights of Maker Faire New York
Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories: Maker Faire has grown to an overwhelming event, where it just isn’t possible to experience everything, but we’ve pulled together a few highlights of the 2012 “World” Maker Faire in New York.
Maker Faire started out on Friday night with a Mayoral Proclamation declaring Maker Week in New York. Mayor Bloomberg’s words— about his own tinkering background —were surprisingly personal and resounded with many of us.

This event seems really cool. I know there are all kinds of blogs and magazines (like make magazine and instructables.com) that are all about creation and homemade inventions (the high-tech kind) but I didn't realize that there was an entire event dedicated to homemade inventions. It would really be a sight to see. I have to wonder how much of the stuff there is really high tech electronics and how much is just really creative thinking. I'm sure the best things are a mix of both, but the laser cut fabric the article showed is a very different project then the 3D printer. I wish the article gave more explanation on how the faire was set up and what kind of special events were hosted during the faire.
I rather wish I'd had the time to go to both Maker fairs this year. I do find it interesting that one of the EMS art classes made a trip to NYC specifically to attend the Maker Fair. The wooden Automata look adorable, and I would have loved to see them in person. The clockwork reminds me of stories of Asian clockwork toys I've heard.
The Maker's Fair seems like one I would enjoy tremendously. I feel that it is not just at the creative forefront for a wide amount of artistic field, but is especially pertinent to our line of work, especially in the props department. Electronic eyelashes, costumes- great!! There are so many ideas out there that this seems like a great environment for inventions and ideas to go from an idea to a product. I'm curious if company scouts and investors are attending these events, I would hope so! I would be intrigued to find out who in particular attends these events. I would love to check out one of these fairs!
