Pittsburgh Opera's 'La Traviata' is emotionally distant

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Pittsburgh Opera's string of successful productions hit a pothole Saturday night when it opened its season with Giuseppe Verdi's popular "La Traviata" at the Benedum Center, Downtown. Performances do vary from night to night, but some problems heard Friday are likely to persist. The performance began with a pretty account of the Prelude, if a little distant emotionally.

It is unfortunate that the opera is not connecting well with audiences, especially since the Pittsburgh Opera has been having a strong season. The performers, too, seem to have had strong past roles such that is seems there just was not the X-Factor in this show. Sometimes the best ingredients do not always make the best cake.
