L.A. On-Location Filming Increases in Third Quarter

Backstage: Driven by California state tax incentives, on-location feature film production in Los Angeles increased 49.9% during the third quarter of 2011, compared to the same period in 2010.That included production on director Christopher Nolan's big-budget film "Magnus Rex," director Oliver Stone's "Savages," "End of Watch" and "He Loves Me," among others.

It is amazing how much the tax rate effects the location of shooting for the film industry. With the amount of money that film projects bring to a location it is amazing that there is not more competition from other states. With the infrastructure for film in LA it is not surprising that there are so many blockbusters filming in LA. Also LA residents are used to so much on location work which makes it easier to shoot in than New York or Chicago. Good for California this might be the only possible way for them to balance their budgets.

Between this article and the one a few weeks ago about the tax rate in Louisiana, it seems like adjusting your taxes to favor the film industry is really helpful in getting in films and therefore revenue to cities. I'm glad to see that these cities are making it possible for more films to shoot around the country, and that the film industry seems to be happy to oblige and provide the additional revenue that being in a city provides. Seems to be a win-win for both sides in general
