_Wicked_ defies disappointment (and gravity)

The Tartan Online: Unloved by her father and despised by all around her, the Wicked Witch of the West still managed to charm Pittsburgh last Thursday night. Last week marked the return of Broadway Across America’s production of Wicked to Pittsburgh, bringing Elphaba, Glinda, and all the wonders of Oz to the Benedum Center for the first time since 2008.

After the relatively complex analysis for a show that this article gave, I found myself a little disappointed with what the author had to say about the design aspects. It doesn't really make sense to me that the scenic designer would take the time to imagine and bring to life an enormous dragon head if it truly brings no additional meaning to the show, or is "generally unnecessary." Also, having never seen a national tour of a show, I would be interested to know how Wicked translates into Pittsburgh-- if, for example, the wizard's palace has a mechanical, steampunk aesthetic, it seems that local ingredients/flavor would fit particularly well.
