Postcard from Alaska, Part One

Art Works: Last week I was in Alaska as part of the Rasmuson Foundation’s annual Grantmakers Tour. It was quite a trip, both exhaustive and exhausting. We had non-stop 12-hour days, which allowed us to learn and see a lot. We were exposed to every conceivable aspect of Alaska, particularly the Native cultures there. It was really a total education and immersion into their culture, their situation, and their issues.

I am a huge believer in the fact that traveling to different cultures can change who you are for the rest of your life. I have only actually done this once. I went on a two week trip to France and Spain, but in those two short weeks I knew that something was different. To experience new cultures is to open your mind and your creativity to an entirely new and previously unimaginable world. I feel that this is a vital asset of theatre whether you are a performer, designer, management, or anything else. If you understand that there is more to life than your backyard, you will create so much more beauty and depth in your work. "Postcard from Alaska" demonstrated this by stating that they had never seen a culture like this. Maybe in the future, the author will have a job involving Alaskan culture!
