Casting Directors Reach Labor Deal
The Hollywood Reporter: After a week of negotiations between the studios and unionized freelance casting directors, they’ve reached a deal. However, details of the agreement were not available.
I am generally of the notion that if you are doing work for someone, you are entitled to some kind of compensation, normally money. On top of that, I generally believe that when it comes to requesting new people be hired to help with existing work loads, most people are not doing it just to have their employers pay more money to more people. So I find this situation kind of baffling since I am willing to bet that assistant casting directors are almost an expected position regardless of tv show scope.
I know I'm usually the pro-labor voice floating around, but I'm a little confused why the teamsters represent casting directors. While I'm glad that the CDs are represented, but I get a little squeamish about closed-door gag-order negotiations like this. It seems like it might be nice if someday they organized their own union, without all of the connotation that comes with teamsters.
