I'm honestly a little surprised that not knowing how to correctly cite sources is a common enough issue that there is an entire workshop devoted only to that process. I wonder if this is one of those things that people get in high school but quickly forget, or if high schools simply are not correctly teaching how to cite sources. Writing is a really useful skill to have in the workplace and in life, and I feel like that skill is not stressed enough at CMU. This is probably because many of the things we are well known for--the arts, computer science, engineering--are not areas that focus on writing ability. This is similar to the "should artists learn math" issue from the last couple weeks. Should we be trying to make all students skilled writers even if it is not a significant aspect of their field of study?

So high schools are definitely an issue, in my two years of high school English I only learned grammar and citing and MLA during one of those years. Someone who had four years may be able to contribute more....


Part of the issue with citing sources is the constant updates. I use MLA 7 but it is already outdated and I have already lost points on an assignment. The MLA Handbook 8th Edition is not even out yet, but I can't keep up with MLA which is struggling to keep up with technology as online sources develop.


And yes, writing is a valuable skill for all people to learn. CMU thinks it important enough to take a writing class as a freshman, regardless of background experience (i.e. transfer students also take it). The question is not should students know how to write, but how much energy should be put into writing and taken out of intended field of study.
