Haunted Mansion Hitchhiking Ghosts go digital
Boing Boing: "Inside the Magic has an early look at the latest revision to the Walt Disney World Haunted Mansion, where they have replaced the venerable (and wonderful) post-climactic 'Hitchhiking Ghosts' scene with a high-tech version. The original used half-silvered mirrors to make it appear as though a ghostly apparition was sitting in your 'Doom Buggy' with you as you headed for the offload area; the new version uses extremely clever digital 'mirrors' and sensors that allow the ghosts in your cart to interact with you.

It may just be the poor video quality talking, but it honestly doesn't seem like those ghosts are any better than the old ones, which were pretty awesome. It bugs me sometimes that there is always this emphasis on updating technology, but it doesn't always make things better. In fact sometimes it makes them worse. Like 3D. Maybe if I saw this in person, I would feel differently, but for now, I am skeptical how much improvement the digital ghosts make to the audience experience.
It definitely is a large improvement. I know that Disney purists will disagree, but even though the rides like Pirates and Haunted Mansion are so immersive, some of the technology is quite outdated and it makes it look rather tacky. The previous ghosts were stationary and didn't do much, but the level of "motion" that the ghosts now have is quite exciting. (And only Disney fans would go crazy and make a 12-page thread about how amazing this minor improvement is on Disney forums.)
