I'm particularly happy to see that Athol Fugard is receiving this honorary award. It feels that a ton of young playwrights today are writing plays that they hope will "change the way government is run", and oftentimes they reach too high and fall. I don't necessarily have proof of this, but I believe Fugard's plays literally played a role in the fall of apartheid in South Africa. Because his plays are not American, I think he is a 20th century playwright that often gets lost in the shuffle, so I am glad to see him getting due at the Tonys.
